In-Country Training in Applying Inquiry-Based Science Education through ICT in Savannakhet, Lao PDR


To enable teachers from the region to interact and share best practices in the area and also help strengthening networks among education institutions in ASEAN in the farmework of ASEAN Communities 2015, SEAMEO Regional Open Learning Centre (SEAMOLEC), and SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP in Science conducted regional training for improving the education system especially teaching and learning process among local teachers in the region.

The training was in-country training aiming at training secondary school teachers to:

  1. Perform hands-on activities with simple tools
  2. Understand the basic principles of inquiry-based science learning
  3. Creating questions to provoke student expertise in conducting investigations
  4. Designing learning science in the classroom with the inquiry approach
  5. Perform appropriate assessment in the process of inquiry learning
  6. Utilizing ICT on the learning and teaching process that associated with 21st century skill development.

The training was conducted for five days starting from 16 to 20 November 2015, in Teacher Training College, Savannakhet, Lao PDR. The training was attended by 50 teachers from Savannakhet Province. It was opened offcially by Ms Varadune, the deputy director of Teacher Training Department, Ministry of Education and Sports, Lao PDR.

During the training several hands-on activities related to IBSE were introduced. Besides, the basic principles and Assessment of IBSE were also presented. In terms of ICT, the participants were also familiarised with Edmodo platform, and digital book development.

At the end of training, the participants felt very satisfied since all materials were new for them, and they expected the programmes are continued next year.
