In alignment with visionary change in education, SEAMEO QITEP in Science (SEAQIS) and SEAMEO QITEP in Language (SEAQIL) are set to host The International Seminar on Holistic Approaches to 21st Century Education: Fostering Literacy and Differentiated Learning on 18 September 2023, at the Sakala Resort – Badung, Bali.
In this cutting-edge era, the educational landscape of the 21st century operates within a diverse and ever-evolving environment shaped by rapid technological advancements, globalisation, and shifting employment demands. Recognising the importance of adapting and preparing educators and learners for this complex reality, the Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikburistek), has embarked on a transformative journey with the Merdeka Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka).
This international seminar aims to inspire 400 participants, including educators, educational personnel, students, and academics. These participants collectively represent the educational community’s heart, valuable knowledge, and experience to the table.
The seminar commenced with a welcoming remark and opening speech by Prof Dr Nunuk Suryani (Director General of Teachers and Education Personnel, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia). In her speech, she said, “Recognising the pivotal role of both students and educators in the learning process can help to emphasize the importance of engaging learning experiences. Education is essential in shaping our youth’s future. SEAMEO QITEP in Language and SEAMEO QITEP in Science have diligently organised this seminar to enhance science and language education in our region. We commend the dedication of SEAMEO QITEP in Language and SEAMEO QITEP in Science in this endeavor and express our ministry’s full support. I encourage productive discussions during the Governing Board Meetings and wish all delegates to have an enjoyable time in Bali.”
This seminar was divided into two critical sub-themes in two parallel sessions: “Enhancing Literacy through Language Teaching Transformation” and “Enhancing Students’ Literacy through Differentiated Science Learning.”
Each parallel session was divided into two rooms. The presentation in room one in the first parallel session was delivered by Assistant Prof Dr Nirada Chitrakara (Thailand) and Dr Rusmini binti Ku Ahmad (Malaysia). The material presented was about Literacy Development through Language Education in their respective country. Meanwhile, the presentation in room two was delivered by Mr Lee Siew Lin (Singapore) and Mr Mohamad Irwan Shah bin Ladi (Brunei Darussalam). Mr Lee Siew Lin imparted the details about the Best Practices for Differentiated Learning in Singapore, while Mr Mohamad Irwan Shah bin Ladi passed on the material about Pedagogical Practices through a Coaching Programme in The Area of Differentiated Learning.
In the second parallel session, the presentation in room one was delivered by Prof Dr Endry Boeriswati and Sofie Dewayani Ph D. Prof Dr Endry Boeriswati conveyed the material about MBKM Implementation for Cultivating Competent and Globally Competitive Individuals. At the same time, Sofie Dewayani Ph D shared the material about Exploring Innovative Language Teaching Methods and Their Transformative Impact on Literacy. During that time, the presentation in room two was delivered by Dr I Made Alit Mariana and Ms Binar Kasih Sejati. Dr I Made Alit Mariana offered the knowledge regarding Exploring Learning Theory and Teaching Learning Interaction: Meta-Analysis of Predictors to Develop Student Literacy, while Ms Binar Kasih Sejati presented the Science Ecosystem for Literacy Booster material.
Beyond those insightful presentations and discussions, an educational exhibition also accompanied the seminar, providing an invaluable platform for knowledge exchange and the sharing of best practices. Through this inclusive approach, the seminar aims to provide knowledge and preparation for participants regarding holistic approaches to 21st-century education, including the development of literacy and differentiated learning to enhance students’ learning outcomes.
