Integrasi bidangbidang keilmuwan tersebut diharapkan menjadi kunci sukses bagi pembangunan suatu negara, terutama dalam rangka persaingan pengembangan karir pekerjaan\/ketrampilan abad 21 di tataran global. Istilah STEM diluncurkan oleh National Science Foundation Am erika Serikat pada tahun 1990-an sebagai tema gerakan reformasi pendidikan dalam keempat bidang disiplin tersebut untuk meningkatkan jumlah sumber daya manusia yang menguasai bidang-bidang STEM, mengembangkan warga negara yang melek STEM, serta meningkatkan daya saing global Amerika Serikat (AS) dalam inovasi iptek (Hanover Research, 2011).
