Charting the Future: STEM Mastery for Maluku’s Secondary School Teachers (Batch 2)

After a successful convention of the preceded programme (Batch 1) in November 2023 in Maluku, SEAQIS continued its path embarking on a holistic approach to fulfilling STEM’s global trends by conducting batch 2 of  “Pelatihan Guru dalam Implementasi Kebijakan Merdeka Belajar melalui Pendekatan Holistik,” programme. Perpetuated in collaboration with three SEAMEO Centre in Indonesia (SEAQIS, SEAQIL, AND SEAQIM) and the Professional Development Centre for Educators (BGP) of Maluku Province, the programme focused on equipping Maluku secondary school teachers with comprehensive STEM and engineering skills at the forefront.

On this occasion, the session took place at the Swiss-Belhotel in Ambon and was conducted for three consecutive days, from 7 to 9 December 2023. The programme was officially opened by Ms Farida Atihuta (Programme Chief Committee) and Mr Husen (Secretary of Education Department), as well as SEAQIS’ representative Mr Reza Setiawan (Deputy Director of Programme). During this summit, the SEAQIS team was addressed as a facilitator for 40 secondary school teachers in Maluku who were actively participating in the programme.

All participants were equipped with a wide range of topics within the STEM learning framework. These topics included comprehending learning ideas and characteristics as well as diving into complex topic analysis, project creation, and implementation of STEM in relation to 21st-century skills. Moreover, the complexity of the training went beyond traditional teaching, exploring the thoughtful incorporation of STEM in projects intended to strengthen student profiles via the application of Pancasila principles. The training envisioned the smooth integration of STEM learning situations into extracurricular and co-curricular activities.

Furthermore, to officially close the programme, Mr Reza Setiawan encouraged the educators involved to actively incorporate the knowledge they had acquired into their everyday teaching methods in their respective schools. He emphasised the value of working together with the Subject Teacher Working Group (MGMP) or Learning Community, highlighting the need for everyone to collaborate to spread cutting-edge teaching strategies and raise the standard of education, especially in STEM learning.
