The Training Course on Earth and Space Science, held in conjunction with the Training Course on Environmental Education for Sustainable Development, was conducted at SEAMEO BIOTROP in Bogor from 17 – 26 June. 28 science teachers from Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Philippines, and Thailand participated in the program. Eight topics were delivered by instructors from the USA, SEAMEO RECSAM, Bandung Institute of Technology, Bandung University of Education, and SEAMEO QITEP in Science.
As well as taking part in hands-on activities duries the class sessions, the group also went on a day-long excursion to the Jakarta Planetarium and Observatory. There they participated in three workshops conducted by the Planterium and Observatory staff and its Amateur Astronomy Club. A particular highlight was building water rockets and everyone delighted in seeing which team’s rocket flew the furthest and highest!
On the final afternoon both courses joined together for a Cultural Heritage Sharing event which was a wonderfully colourful display of traditional costumes, songs, dances and childhood games from all ASEAN countries. The Training Course on Earth and Space Science was a great success. The participant representative spoke warmly in his Closing Ceremony speech about all the valuabe science education information it had taught him, and about the friendships he had formed with other participants.
