Training Course on Inquiry Based Science Learning and Teachers Professional Development

From 9 to 13 November 2014, SEAQIS conducted three training courses simultaneously. They were Training Course on Inquiry-Based Learning Development for Secondary High School Teachers, Training Course on Teachers Professional Development and Training Course on Inquiry-Based Science Learning Empowerment for Elementary Teachers. The trainings were officially opened by Dr Unifah Rosyidi, Head of Centre for Teacher Professional Development, Ministry of Education and Culture, and attended by Dr Paristiyanti of SEAMOLEC, Mr Iwan Heryawan of CDETEP in Science, Mr Sirojudin of Local Education Office of Bandung, and Dr Maman Wijaya as Acting Director of SEAQIS.

The first training focused on teaching science using the inquiry approach. The training was aimed at strengthening teachers’ understanding of inquiry approach and providing alternative learning models in teaching science. It was attended by 40 high school teachers from six provinces, namely Aceh, West Sumatera, South Sumatera, Banten, West Java, West Kalimantan and West Nusa Tenggara. The professors from Indonesia University of Education were the facilitators of the training. During the training, the participants applied the inquiry approach in teaching science by making several learning models.

The Teacher Professional Development course was attended by 40 teachers from Indonesia. They were from West Java Province, East Sumatera Province, West Sumatera Province, West Kalimantan Province, West Nusa Tenggara Province, Central Java Province, and Lampung Province. The resource persons were science education experts/lecturers/instructors from SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP in Science, Centre of Development and Empowerment for Teacher and Education Personnel (CDETEP) in Science, Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia University of Education, UNESA, LPMP Central Java, Pusbangprodik BPSDMPK & PMP, Disdikpora Kab. Bandung Barat. The purposes of this training were to improve teaching quality, increase professionalism, improve paper and scientific publication writing skills and to provide reinforcement of character and motivation in teaching.
The third training was Training Course on Inquiry-Based Science Learning Empowerment for Elementary Teachers which was a collaborative project with Dinas Pendidikan Kota Bandung and attended by 90 Science teachers from Elementary schools in Bandung. The resource persons and trainers in this training were from the SEAQIS team, and Dinas Pendidikan Kota Bandung Team (School Supervisors and School Principals). The purpose of this training was to empower elementary teachers in science subjects especially in Inquiry-Based learning.
