Public Lecture: "Inspiring Science Teacher with Inquiry-Based Learning"

On 21th June 2013 SEAMEO QITEP in Science conducted a public lecture titled “Inspiring Science Teacher with Inquiry-Based Learning” in Auditorium of Centre of Development Education. Prof. Carl Wenning from Illinois State University was given the lecture, moderated by Dr. Arif Hidayat from Indonesia University of Education. Prof. Wenning shared his experiences from his research on implementation inquiry-based science learning by teachers in United States. By his research, he designed a variety of inquiry-based teaching/learning approaches that progressively move from less sophisticated to more sophisticated, and in which the locus of control shift from the teacher and the student.  It introduced as “Inquiry Spectrum”, with the levels are, respectively: Discovery Learning, Interactive Demonstration, Inquiry Lesson, Inquiry Lab, Real-world Applications and Hypothetical Inqury.

More than 50 teachers and teacher trainers who attended the public lecture were experienced a sample implementation of the Inquiry Spectrum, directly guided by Prof. Wenning. The topic of science lesson was Bouyancy, and in it practiced until level spectrum of Inquiry Lab.  Before concluded his lecture, Prof. Wenning also gave an explanation how to conduct the Real-world Applications and Hypothetical Inquiry  level of the Bouyancy topic.
