Learning Computational Thinking with Science Teachers in Jombang

From 13 to 15 June 2023, SMP Negeri 3 Jombang Regency hosted a workshop on Computational Thinking (CT) in Science learning. SEAQIS, the Department of Education and Culture of Jombang Regency, along with the Association of Junior High School Science Teacher of Jombang Regency (MGMP IPA Kabupaten Jombang) had successfully organised the workshop which was attended by 113 junior high school science teachers from various public and private schools in Jombang Regency.

The workshop aimed to provide science teachers with an understanding of the meaning, purpose, benefits, and characteristics of CT. The participants were also invited to analyse essential science topics that can be taught using CT and integrate CT in science learning through developing student worksheets (Lembar Kerja Peserta Didik/LKPD). The expected output of this workshop is that it will produce training products in the form of reports on CT-integrated science learning practices and the design of student worksheets.

Mr Safak Efendi, the Head of Junior High School Development Division at Department of Education and Culture of Jombang Regency, officially opened the workshop which was also attended by Mr Yoni, the Junior High School Supervisor of Jombang Regency. Dr Indrawati as the Director of SEAQIS thanked the Department of Education and Culture of Jombang Regency for their support to the science teacher community in self-development through collective teacher activities in MGMP. She also expressed her appreciation to Ms Dwi Prapminingrum, the Chairperson of MGMP IPA Jombang Regency, and the regional head of MGMP IPA for their cooperation and participation in this workshop.

Dr Poppy K. Devi, Mr Heri Setiadi, and Mr Gunawan Muhammad as SEAQIS facilitators discussed the concept of CT and its characteristics. It was emphasised that in the future of workforce, systematic and logical problem-solving skills are the qualities a person must possess—and that skill can be trained through CT. They also guided the participants in using applications such as Phet in science learning. The workshop also analysed possible LKPD that can be utilised for CT training. Moreover, the participants were enthusiastic, actively trying Phet application, as well as working on the activity sheets provided.
