SEAQIS Holds Strategic Discussion with Anne Jolly to Strengthen STEM Education in Southeast Asia

SEAQIS held an online meeting with Anne Jolly, a globally recognised expert in STEM education and the author of the widely acclaimed book STEM by Design, on 13 January 2026. STEM by Design has become one of the most influential references in STEM learning worldwide and serves as an important foundation for SEAQIS in developing and implementing its STEM programmes across Southeast Asia.

The discussion reflects SEAQIS’ strong commitment to advancing quality STEM learning in the region through engagement with leading international experts. Since initiating its STEM programmes in 2015, SEAQIS has consistently promoted STEM as an integrated learning approach that strengthens problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity, rather than merely introducing technology into classrooms.

During the meeting, SEAQIS presented an overview of its STEM Programme, highlighting its long-term development, regional scope, and key achievements. SEAQIS also shared challenges commonly encountered in STEM implementation, including silo-based teaching practices, varying levels of teacher readiness, and limited systemic support for integrated learning. Despite these challenges, SEAQIS’ STEM initiatives have contributed to strengthening national STEM frameworks and supporting teachers’ professional development at both national and regional levels.

In response, Anne Jolly noted that many of the challenges faced in STEM implementation are also experienced globally. She emphasised the importance of strong systemic support, sustained teacher collaboration, and supportive school leadership in enabling meaningful and sustainable STEM learning. According to her, effective STEM initiatives require long-term commitments in terms of time, resources, and institutional support.

As a follow-up, Anne Jolly expressed her appreciation for SEAQIS’ sustained efforts in advancing STEM learning across Southeast Asia and welcomed opportunities for future collaboration to further strengthen STEM education in the region.
