Technology is growing rapidly, from society 4.0 to society 5.0, from 4G to 5G. Responding to these trends, in early 2022 SEAMEO QITEP in Science, in collaboration with SEAMEO SEAMOLEC, PENS, and other educational institutions held a Webinar under the title Metaverse for Education on January 12, 2022. This webinar presented various materials related to Metaverse from many educational experts and academics in Indonesia, including Dr Sc Agr Yudi Nurul Ihsan, S Pi, M Sc (Dean of UNPAD), Dr Indrawati (Director of SEAMEO QITEP in Science), and Dr Gatot Hari Priowirjanto (Coordinator of SEAMEO Centres in Indonesia).
This webinar discusses the role of education in the digital era, especially the Metaverse. This webinar is open to the public and attended by almost 1000 participants consisting of teachers, lecturers, and students from various regions and educational institutions in Indonesia. Dr Indrawati, Director of SEAMEO QITEP in Science, gave the opening remarks and a brief presentation on Metaverse in Education. In her presentation, she mentioned that the development of technology is inevitable. Especially now, with the emergence of the term Metaverse, which means going beyond the boundaries of the world. Educators, especially teachers, must act immediately to advance education in this era.
Dr Indrawati said that In this era, a lot of jobs done by humans have been replaced by AI technology or robots. Likewise, the world of education cannot be separated from it. The teacher’s role as an information provider can be replaced with technology, but the teacher’s role to educate and provide character strengthening cannot be replaced with any advanced technology. Thus it is important for teachers and education personnel to pay attention to this condition and continue to develop their competencies,
