From 7 – 16 October 2014, SEAQIS conducted its annual Science Laboratory Management training course. It was officially opened by the Deputy Director for Program, Dr Indarjani and attended by 25 science teachers from all over Indonesia and other SEAMEO member countries, such as Cambodia, Malaysia, Lao PDR and Philippines.
Participants learned about management and administration in the laboratory (including equipment and chemicals), science experiments based on the inquiry approach, how to maintain and repair laboratory equipment, health and safety in laboratory, designing inquiry-based worksheets, hands-on low-cost equipment, and simulating inquiry-based practical works in the laboratory. The participants were actively involved in every activity.
During the training, participants visited Saung Angklung Udjo to enjoy an angklung performance and also visited SMA Kristen Yahya Bandung to observe its science laboratory. They were also involved in some practical works in the Chemistry Laboratory at the Bandung Institute of Technology. At the end of the training, participants performed cultural songs and dances of their respective countries and regions. After participating in this course, it is hoped that the teachers will perform better science experiments with their students, increase their laboratory management competence and improve their students’ inquiry skills.
