Megumi Sugimoto, Ph.D Dispatched by MEXT Japan to Share Her Expertise in Disaster Management for SEAMEO QITEP in Science

One of the efforts of SEAMEO QITEP in Science to improve the quality of science learning and its implementation is to invite expert speakers from various countries for the internal and external forums.

In 2013, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Japan is pleased to help bring Megumi Sugimoto, Ph.D., who also works as a researcher at the ICHARM (International Center for Water Hazard and Risk Management) UNESCO from Japan. During her 25 to 28 March 2013 visit in Bandung, Ms. Sugimoto had internal discussions at SEAMEO QITEP in Science, especially in terms of the evaluation of the impact of education and training. She was also a speaker at the workshop and as well as a public lecturer on mitigation and evacuation disasters, especially earthquakes and tsunamis for science teachers, teacher trainers and representatives of NGOs in education.

Educational institutions have a strategic role in disseminating information and fostering voluntary movement and alert disaster. With the provision of adequate knowledge for teachers and students in schools on disaster mitigation efforts and evacuation, it is expected that the victims of the disaster can be minimized.
