SEAMEO QITEP in Science was invited to send its representative to the ASEAN plus One Training Program on Understanding China conducted on 31 August – 22 September 2013. The program was divided in two parts, the first part was conducted on 31 August – 15 September 2013 in Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), and the second part was conducted on 16 – 22 September 2013 in Guizhou Province. It aimed to promote better understanding of China among young diplomats, officials, and scholars from ASEAN countries who work in China-related positions.
The first part of the program discussed China’s political systems, economy, diplomacy, education, culture, military, and China-ASEAN relations. The lectures were presented by experts and lecturers from universities in Beijing, and from related institutions. Additionally, there were also excursion programs visiting high-tech enterprises, rural countryside in Western China, resident areas of ethnic minorities, and historical and cultural attraction in Beijing and China.
The second part of the program was attending the China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week (CAECW) organized by ASEAN-China Centre in collaboration with the Guizhou Provincial Department of Education, and several local universities in Guizhou Province. In the CAECW
program, the ASEAN plus One participants attended a forum, The China – ASEAN Young Education Officers Forum: The Role of the Youth and Future Development. In the forum, several issues were discussed including the education system in each country, student exchanges, and studying abroad. Each ASEAN plus One participant should also deliver a speech about their views on the role of youth in Education. During the program, the participants also visited universities in Guizhou Province including Guiyang University, Guizhou University, Kaili University, and Xingyi Normal University for Nationalities.
