To commemorate its 14th years anniversary, SEAQIS held a competition for students called the Indonesian Youth STEAM Challenge (IYSC). IYSC is a national competition in the form of STEAM Challenge for elementary, junior high, and senior high school students which has the goal of developing 21st-century skills (creative and critical thinking, communication, and collaboration) through the application of Engineering Design Process, scientific literacy, numeracy, inquiry, and problem-solving.
IYSC 2023 is the first STEAM challenge held by SEAQIS with the Indonesian Science Society (ISS), consisting of two rounds: semifinal and final rounds. The semifinal round was held on 17 June 2023, attended by 116 teams from various regions in Indonesia. In this round, the participants in each team took written test related to literacy and numeracy as well as science and mathematics. The team with the score that met the qualification proceeded to the final round from 8 to 11 July 2023, attended by 35 teams from 26 schools in various regions in Indonesia, with a total of 101 students and 25 teachers as team supervisors.
In the final round, there was five kinds of competition categories, namely: Eco Car Challenge with 10 teams from elementary school level, Paper Bridge Challenge with eight teams from junior high school level and seven teams from high school level, as well as Seismic Building Challenge participated by seven teams from junior high school level and three teams from high school level. All the finalists had to complete the challenges by making an object prototype and applying science and mathematics concepts.
It turned out that there were five grand winners from each category obtaining the winners’ trophies that were presented by Dr Praptono, the Acting Secretary to the Director General of Teachers and Education Personnel from Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology.
