A Closer Look on SEAQIS and PT Pesona Khatulistiwa Nusantara Collaboration: Cultivating Science Learning and STEM Implementations

SEAQIS with PT Pesona Khatulistiwa Nusantara (PT PKN) conducted training from 7 to 8 December 2023 in Bulungan Regency, North Kalimantan under the theme Peningkatan Kompetensi Pedagogik dan Profesional Bagi Guru Sekolah Dasar dan Sekolah Menengah Pertama and Peningkatan Kompetensi Supervisi Pembelajaran IPA bagi Guru, Kepala Sekolah, dan Pengawas Sekolah Satuan Pendidikan Sekolah Dasar dan Sekolah Menengah Pertama (STEM dan Implementasinya pada Pembelajaran Sains).

This training was intended for teachers, principals, and school supervisors and a manifestation of the collaboration between SEAQIS and PT Energi Nusa Mandiri (PT ENM)—the holding company of PT PKN—that has been signed earlier on 17 January 2023. Moreover, Mr Suparmin Seto (Head of Department of Education and Culture in Bulungan Regency) was present and expressed his hope that Bulungan Regency teachers would be more advanced and had broader knowledge after this training. This hope aligned with PT PKN’s goal of collaborating with SEAQIS, as explained by PT PKN’s Community Development Manager, Mr Iwan Suryatno. In addition, this activity was a concrete action from PT PKN to develop children’s resources affected by mining in the area.

In this training, the SEAQIS team was in charge as facilitators. Dr Indrawati taught principals and school supervisors, Mr Gunawan Muhammad taught junior high school teachers, while Mr Heri Setiadi taught primary school teachers. The materials presented to teachers included “Science Learning in Merdeka Curriculum”, “STEM and its Implementation in Science Learning”, “STEM Learning Project Design”, and “Preparation of STEM Learning Tools”. As for school principals and supervisors, the materials presented included “Policies for the Role of Supervisors in the Implementation of Merdeka Belajar in Education Units” and “Learning Leadership”.

Through the strategy of strengthening instructional leadership, equalising and improving the competence of teachers and education personnel, and reinforcing the learning process; SEAQIS and PT PKN sought to improve pedagogic and professional competence for teachers as well as managerial and supervisory competence for principals and school supervisors. Therefore, Dr Indrawati (Director of SEAQIS) expected that after this training, teachers can develop learning tools that follow the curriculum and develop students’ potential. Conscecutively, principals and school supervisors can also improve their role in supporting science learning and STEM implementation.
