SEAMEO Smart School 4.0

Currently, students are facing challenges in the era of industrial revolution 4.0. This era is marked with the collaboration between man and technology. This affects many sectors of life including the economic sector; in production process, for instance. This process combines three aspects including man, machine, and big data, to produce smart products and smart services. Therefore, focus on human resource improvement is required to create productive and adaptive human resources, especially in vocational education.

SEAQIS in collaboration with the Directorate for Vocational School Development (Ministry of Education and Culture), Indonesian SEAMEO Centres Coordinator, West Java Provincial Education Office, SEAMEO SEAMOLEC, and Three State Vocational High Schools in Bandung (SMKN 1, SMKN 3, SMKN 11) conducted SEAMEO Smart School 4.0 Programme. This programme is expected to be a trigger for ICT-based learning in the vocational school.

This programme will equip students with skills in developing Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Internet of Thing (IoT), and Edu Game products. Besides, this programme also supports central and provincial government programmes.

The Smart School 4.0 Programme will be run for 10 months from September 2019 to June 2020. The students will learn about AR, VR, IoT, and Edu Game through online and offline learning modes. This programme involves 108 students from three vocational schools in Bandung; SMKN 1 Bandung, SMKN 3 Bandung, and SMKN 11 Bandung. The opening of the programme has been conducted on 2 September 2019 at SEAQIS. The opening was attended by Dr Dewi Sartika (Head of Provincial Education Office), Dr Gatot Hari Priowirjanto (Indonesian SEAMEO Centres Coordinator), Dr Indrawati (Director of SEAQIS), Mr Hendra Kusuma Sumantri (Head of Information, Communication, and Technology Office), Ms Nani Sri Iriyani (Principals of SMKN 1 Bandung), Ms Euis Purnama (Principal of SMKN 3 Bandung), and Ms Anne Sukmawati (Principal of SMKN 11 Bandung). In addition, the commencement of the programme is marked with the signing of Memorandum of Understanding between SEAQIS and the three vocational schools. The signing was conducted on 5 September 2019 at Santika Premiere Hotel, witnessed by Dr Gatot Hari Priowirjanto.

After accomplishing the programme, the students are expected to acquire the Virtual Coordinator Training (VCT) skills consisting of 13 skills, develop simple AR, VR, IoT, and Edu Game products. This programme employs several principles including effective and efficient, collaborative, human resource empowerment, quality-oriented, interest and talent, and integrated cognitive and non-cognitive skills.

At the end of the programme, the students will be awarded a certificate of expertise. To be awarded this certificate, the students shall participate in the learning process both online and offline learning modes. The learning activities are conducted in group, in which one group consists of three students from the same school.

During the implementation of the programme, there will be resource person, instructor, and companion teacher. The learning session will be led by lecturer from partner universities. The instructor consists of SEAQIS’ academic staff and selected teachers. They will actively involve during the face-to-face learning mode (offline mode). The companion teacher is a teacher who will accompany and guide students in conducting the independent tasks and projects including in developing the AR, VR, IoT, and Edu Game products.

To assure the quality of the programme, monitoring and evaluation will be performed. In this programme, Logic model will be employed as the method of evaluation. The logic model is chosen since this model is appropriated with the characteristics of the programme. In the Logic model there is a direct relationship from one situation to another. It is a logic relationship from inputs to outputs and to outcomes. This can explain the significances of the Programme in producing students who have the attitudes, knowledge, and skills in developing the required products in accordance with the industrial revolution 4.0.
