Empowering Teachers, Transforming Futures: Insights from the 2024 World Teacher’s Day International Seminar

 

On 5 October 2024, SEAQIS celebrated World Teacher’s Day with the theme “Empowering Teachers, Transforming Futures”. The Directorate General of Teachers and Education Personnel, SEAQIS, SEAQIM, SEAQIL, as well as Professional Development Center for Educators of West Java, D.I. Yogyakarta, and Banten Provinces gathered teachers in the hybrid international seminar on the 3rd floor of Graha Utama, Gedung A, Kemendikbudristek in Jakarta, live streaming from Zoom Meetings and the YouTube Channel Ditjen GTK Kemendikbud RI.  

Dr Brian Arieska Pranata (Director of SEAQIL), Mr John Arnold Sasi Siena (Deputy Director for Programme & Development of SEAMES), Ms Maki Katsuno Hayashikawa (Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Jakarta) gave welcoming remarks about World Teacher’s Day, followed by Prof Dr Nunuk Suryani (Director General of Teacher and Education Personnel). “I believe that with the contribution of all parties, we can contribute bright futures,” said Prof Nunuk as she officially opened the seminar.  

The first keynote speaker, Dr Itje Chodidjah (The Executive Chair of the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO) opened the session. “It is both privilege and responsibility to highlight the indispensable role of teachers in shaping not only the future of education but the future of society itself and the future of the world,” she began her session with “The Role of Teachers in Shaping Society”. The second keynote speaker, Dr Elly Herliani (SEAQIS) continued by presenting teachers’ contribution to climate change education. Meanwhile, six plenary speakers from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines were invited to share their best practices on the evolving role of teachers in modern education.  

The seminar closed with remarks from Mr Ferdiansyah (a member from House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia) who expressed his appreciation for the insightful discussions and presentations. He hopes that these discussions will lead to tangible changes in the development of teachers and education systems. By valuing teachers’ voices and investing in their growth, there is great hope for creating a more dynamic, inclusive, and impactful education system for future generations.
