Workshop in Strengthening Science Education Research Materials

As a follow-up action after Training on Research Proposal Writing that had been held in February 2022, SEAMEO QITEP in Science (SEAQIS) conducted a Workshop in Strengthening Science Education Research Materials from 28 to 30 June 2022 at Yello Hotel, Bandung. There were 20 participants from West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and West Sumatera that have been selected based on their proposals from the previous training.

The workshop materials were prepared to meet the participants’ needs in conducting their research. It was mainly based on their research topics which are Science, Technology, Mathematics, and Engineering (STEM), Computational Thinking (CT), and Learning Media. According to the opening remark by Mr Reza Setiawan as the Deputy Director for Programme of SEAQIS, this workshop was intended to strengthen participant’s conceptual understanding on the topic of their research. In the beginning of the workshop, participants learned about Learning Media Concept that was facilitated by Ms Meidina Rizkita and Ms Dewi Mayang Salshabylla (Research and Development Staffs at SEAQIS). On the next session, the participants were split into two groups based on their research topics, which are STEM and CT. The STEM class was facilitated by Mr Septian Karyana (Research and Development Staff at SEAQIS), while the CT class was facilitated by Mr Gunawan Muhammad (Research and Development Staff at SEAQIS). The overall materials were concentrated on the concept and how the participants could apply CT and STEM in learning activities at school. There are some methods applied in this training: (1) lectures from the facilitators; (2) group discussion; (3) worksheets; and (4) direct practice/simulation in using learning media/activities prepared by the facilitators.

On the last day, the facilitators reviewed all of the materials given in the workshop and advised on how the participants could improve their proposals. Dr Dedi Herawadi closed this workshop by delivering his gratitude to all of the participants and hoping that this workshop could be fruitful for them so that there will be an improvement in the next workshop.
