SEAQIS PENTADECA FIESTA: A Celebration of the 15th Years Journey

 

SEAMEO QITEP in Science (SEAQIS) celebrated its 15th anniversary or SEAQIS Pentadeca Fiesta by conducting a Seminar, Talk Show, and Climate Change Education Exhibition at Plaza Insan Berprestasi, Building A Kemendikbudristek, Jakarta, on 15 July 2024. 

The event was officially opened by the Secretary of the Directorate General of Teachers and Education Personnel of the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Mr Temu Ismail,S.Pd., M.Sc. 

With the theme “Growing Awareness of the Importance of Climate Change Education in the Midst of Rapid Digital Transformation”, SEAQIS aims to provide up-to-date information about this issue, not only for participants but also policy makers. Apart from that, SEAQIS also wants to invite the community to actively participate in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. 

SEAQIS has developed the Southeast Asia Climate Change Education Program (SEA-CEP) to promote Climate Change Education in Sustainable Development in the ASEAN region. SEA-CEP phase 1 has also been implemented by developing the Climate Resilient Schools (SBI) and Climate Resilient Community (Komunitas Berketahanan Iklim-KBI) models in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Therefore, SEAQIS invited representatives from 19 schools and one community from Java Island to take part in the exhibition. 

In seminar session and talk show, SEAQIS presented reputable speakers in their respective fields to share some best practices, in order to inspire people to implement climate change education around their environment. The speakers were: Mr Ryco Farysca Adi, S.Si (Executive Director of CV PIAREA); as well as the representatives from the Climate Resilient Schools (Sekolah Berketahanan Iklim/SBI), Ms Nurhayati (SD Sukatani Cianjur); Ms Helsy Elselia (SMPN 2 Tanjungsari); Ms Yulvianah (SMAN 2 Bandung); and Ms Suyanti Supardi (SD Alam Pacitan). 

Moreover, several schools from STEM training programme with PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) and SEAQIS’ partners also participated in the exhibition. There were five schools from Siak Regency and Bengkalis Regency, representing more than 20 schools to do the STEM exhibition: SDN 30 Mandau, SMPN 2 Mandau, SDN 4 Minas Jaya, SMPN 4 Minas, and SMPN 1 Kandis. 

As part of the SEAQIS Pentadeca Fiesta, SEAQIS also conducted the final round of the 2nd Indonesian Youth STEAM Challenge (IYSC) from 8 to 11 July 2024. IYSC is a collaborative programme between SEAQIS and the Indonesian Scientific Society (ISS). There were 52 teams from elementary, junior, and senior high school levels, with three challenge categories: straw bridge (elementary); hydraulic machine (junior high); and submarine torpedo (senior high). 

The winners were divided into three categories: gold, silver, and bronze. However, there were the grand winners for each competition category who were awarded during SEAQIS Pentadeca Fiesta celebration: SD UMP (elementary), SMP Insan Cendikia Madani-ICM Team B (junior high) and Cita Hati Christian West Campus (senior high).
