SEAQIS continued its mission to enhance STEM education by conducting a two-day training session for 30 teachers at Cijawura 122 Elementary School from 22 to 23 August 2024. The event was led by SEAQIS facilitators, Ms Lintang Ratri Prastika and Mr Gunawan Muhammad, who facilitated the interactive workshop focused on deepening the participants’ understanding of STEM learning.
The workshop began with an explanation of the core concepts of STEM learning, followed by an engaging hands-on activity to illustrate the characteristics of STEM education. The participants were challenged to create paper boats that could hold the most load, a practical exercise that emphasized problem-solving, critical thinking, and engineering design process as the key components of STEM.
Building on this foundation, the facilitators presented strategies for selecting suitable topics for STEM learning in the classroom. The teachers then engaged in group discussions to decide on topics that could be integrated into their teaching. The selected topics were tailored to different grade levels: for classes 1 to 2, the teachers chose to focus on making eco-bricks; classes 3 to 4 selected the creation of a simple solar oven prototype; and classes 5 to 6 opted for constructing a fan powered by renewable energy sources.
These chosen topics are now set to be developed into detailed lesson plans and student worksheets, which will guide the implementation of STEM learning in classroom activities. This initiative reflects SEAQIS’s ongoing commitment to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills to foster a robust STEM education environment in schools.
