STEM Education Goes to East Kalimantan

SEAQIS and SEAQIL organised an intensive STEM-based training programme for junior high school science teachers across the province. The event was held at Novotel Hotel, Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, from 24 to 26 October 2024. SEAQIS and SEAQIL welcomed 30 junior high school science teachers and 30 high school language teachers from 10 cities and regencies within East Kalimantan. The training aimed to sharpen teachers’ skills in differentiated and STEM education approaches, specifically aligning with competencies assessed in the PISA science framework.

Opening the event, Ms Wiwik Setiawati (Head of the Professional Development Center for Educators of East Kalimantan Province) highlighted the need for ongoing growth in teachers’ skills. “All teachers must be ready for any curriculum changes, but the focus should always remain on improving classroom quality. The teachers we need today are those who are committed to continuous learning”, stated her, which resonated with participants who recognised the need to prepare students for a globally competitive future.

With a mission to strengthen teachers’ ability to deliver engaging and localised STEM content, the event featured sessions led by esteemed facilitators from SEAQIS, which are Mr Lukman Nulhakim and Mr Heri Setiadi. Participants expressed high hopes for applying these new strategies in their classrooms. With SEAQIS’s commitment to supporting educators even beyond the training, the hope is that this programme will set a new standard for impactful, locally relevant STEM education in the region.
