Transforming Science Education with Computational Thinking Integration Training

SEAQIS conducted a training programme on integrating Computational Thinking (CT) into science education for 50 high school Physics, Chemistry, and Biology teachers from Banda Aceh City and Aceh Besar Regency. Held from 12 to 14 December 2024 at SMAN 4 DKI Jakarta in Banda Aceh, the training aimed to equip participants with skills to incorporate CT into science teaching and enhance students’ abilities to address global challenges.

Mr Syarwan Joni (The Head of the Regional Branch Office of Banda Aceh) opened the event by emphasising the importance of a planned and structured approach to teacher competency development. In his opening remarks, he stated, “This training serves as a platform for the professional growth of science teachers in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar, contributing to improved education quality in our region. Teacher competency development must be conducted in a measurable and consistent manner, and teachers must possess skills beyond subject mastery, including the ability to foster strong connections with their students.”

During the three-day event, participants engaged in theoretical and practical sessions on computational thinking and its application in science education. The training covered a range of topics, consisting of current trends and issues in science education; the foundational principles of computational thinking; and the integration of CT into Physics, Chemistry, and Biology lessons. Mr Reza Setiawan, Dr Poppy Kamalia Devi, Mr Heri Setiadi, and Mr Dian Purnama served as facilitators, guiding the participants throughout the sessions to ensure they gained a comprehensive understanding of CT and its classroom implementation.

In his closing remarks, SEAQIS representative Mr Rizwan Darmawan, emphasised the importance of incorporating computational thinking to develop students’ structured problem-solving skills. He stated, “We hope participants will apply the knowledge gained to encourage students to think critically and systematically in addressing real-world issues.”
