Pekanbaru, February 2025 – SEAMEO QITEP in Science (SEAQIS), in collaboration with PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PT PHR) WK Rokan, has successfully implemented a competency enhancement program for elementary and junior high school teachers in the PT PHR WK Rokan operational area, Riau Province. This program is part of PT PHR’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, running from September 2024 to February 2025.
A total of 44 schools in Bengkalis, Kampar, Rokan Hilir, and Siak regencies received training to integrate the Local Context STEM approach into the Strengthening the Pancasila Student Profile Project (P5), focusing on climate change and environmentally friendly natural resource management.
The program was carried out in four strategic stages.
The first stage, In-Service Training, took place from 17–20 September 2024 at The Zuri Hotel, Pekanbaru. This training provided an understanding of the integrated STEM approach within P5, as well as issues related to climate change and local natural resource management. It enhanced teachers’ comprehension of the Local Context STEM concept and its application in learning.
The second stage, On-the-Job Learning 1, involved online mentoring sessions for teachers in developing STEM-based learning materials for P5, including lesson plans, teaching modules, worksheets, and assessment instruments tailored to each school’s context.
The third stage, STEM Competition, was held from 23–24 December 2024 at The Zuri Hotel Pekanbaru, providing a platform for students and teachers to showcase their P5 projects using the STEM approach to address climate change and natural resource management issues. Some of the competition winners included:
- School Category: SMA Negeri 5 Tualang (Senior High School winner), SMP Negeri 4 Tambang (Junior High School winner), and UPT SDN 024 Petapahan Jaya (Elementary School winner).
- STEM Challenge Category: SMA Negeri 1 Rimba Melintang won the Strongest Building Challenge, UPT SMPN 1 Tapung Hulu excelled in the Strongest Bridge Challenge, and UPT SDN 024 Petapahan Jaya emerged as the champion in the Eco-Powered Car Challenge.
This competition served as a platform for students to demonstrate their understanding and creativity in applying STEM to solve environmental issues.
The fourth stage, On-the-Job Learning 2, involved the implementation of STEM learning in classrooms with mentoring and observation by the SEAQIS and PT PHR teams. This phase took place from 18–20 February 2025, benefiting more than 3,000 students across Riau Province. The mentoring process encouraged the sustainable implementation of STEM in participating schools.
Representatives from the Education Offices of the four regencies participated as observers to ensure the program aligned with regional education policies.
The program’s success demonstrates that the STEM approach within P5 has a positive impact on both teachers and students. Teachers have become more adept at designing, implementing, and evaluating STEM learning, while students have shown enthusiasm and creativity in solving environmental challenges.
SEAQIS and PT PHR remain committed to supporting the improvement of science education in Indonesia, aiming to cultivate a generation that is critical, creative, and environmentally conscious.
